PERSONAL: Born May 22, 1917, in New York, NY; son of Harry Samuel (a cutter of women's coats) and Clara (a homemaker; maiden name, Wexler) Nagrin; married Helen Tamiris (a dancer), 1946 (died, 1966); married Phyllis Steele (a painter), January 24, 1992. Education: City College (now of the City University of New York), B.S., 1940.
