SIDELIGHTS:
Julianne Lutz Newton is an ecologist whose first book, Aldo Leopold's Odyssey: Rediscovering the Author of "A Sand County Almanac," is a biography of the famed naturalist whose work is considered the bible of modern ecology and conservationism. As part of her research, Newton sifted through a wealth of writings that Leopold produced over the course of his career. Stephanie Mills, in a review for ForeWord, felt that "this welcome and timely new addition to the Leopold literature reminds readers of Leopold's abiding hope that sufficient knowledge could promote an ecologically friendly civilization." Orion critic Amy J. Wildermuth remarked that "with respect to Leopold the scientist, Newton gives us our best look yet at his evolving ecological ideas," concluding that the "insightful book illustrates that Leopold still has much to teach us." In a review for Audubon, Frank Graham, Jr., noted that Newton initially began the book as her doctoral thesis, but remarked of the end result: "It rises above the run of academic publications, … taking wing on Leopold's prose."
