SIDELIGHTS: Jeannette M. Oppedisano is the author of Historical Encyclopedia of American Women Entrepreneurs: 1776 to the Present. A gathering of 120 mini-profiles, the work highlights Oppedisano's academic interest in women's multidisciplinary entrepreneurship and philanthropy, as well as her ongoing research in innovation and change management.
Including businesswomen from Clara Barton to Jane Addams, Lydia Pinkham, and Oprah Winfrey, Oppedisano's collection of biographies consists of women from various ethnic, religious, racial, and geographic backgrounds. Fields of endeavor from making pottery to repairing automotive transmissions are also spotlighted in this survey. The author demonstrates how women have taken the same sort of risks as their male counterparts for over two centuries and have gone on to have an impact not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. In a Booklist review, a contributor felt that in her goal of showing "women's contributions to the nation's economy" and of providing "role models to young women," Oppedisano "has succeeded admirably." The same reviewer concluded that the book is an "outstanding addition to the field of women's studies."
