PERSONAL: Born March 16, 1957, in Athens, Greece; daughter of Leslie LaMonte and Jean (Duce) Palmer; married Paul Mathiesen; children: Wyndham, Hugo. Education: University of Toronto, B.A., 1979; New York University, M.A., 1981; University of Brighton, Ph.D., 1994.

CAREER: Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, worked as assistant professor of craft and design history; Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Veronika Gervers Memorial Lecturer, 1992, staff member, beginning 1996, currently Nora E. Vaughan Fashion Costume Curator, Textiles and Costume Section, Near Eastern and Asian Civilizations Department, and chair of Veronika Gervers Research Fellowship in Textiles and Costume. York University, adjunct faculty member; lecturer at other institutions, including Parsons School of Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ray College of Design, International Academy of Fashion Design and Merchandising, Ontario College of Art, Sheridan College, and University of Toronto. Kent State University, worked as assistant curator at university museum. Worked as designer of hats and dresses in New York, NY.
