SIDELIGHTS:

Jerry J. Pollock told CA: "Science was where my destiny led me, or so I thought. I became a researcher and published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. I received seven patents, none of which resulted in commercial products. During the height of my career, I was awarded more than two-million dollars in research funds. In 1995 my career was interrupted for a period of five years because of an episode of manic depression. I returned to Stony Brook in the fall of 2000 to assume my present duties.

"Beginning in October of 1998, I had some unusual spiritual experiences which prompted me to begin writing my book Divinely Inspired: Spiritual Awakening of a Soul. These experiences have changed my life forever and have made possible the recapturing of the essence of who I really am. I have been able to shed the neurosis of an unloving, non-nurturing childhood that has plagued me for sixty years and push my mental illness away. Divinely Inspired was written to help people who have been brought up by unworthy parents and/or suffered the devastation of mental illness. The book also has a second purpose. It highlights an old message of the affirmation of the recognition of God's presence in our world.

" Divinely Inspired was written in much the same way as I wrote my many research grant proposals, except writing as a scientist is different than writing as a would-be writer of the arts. I spent two years of research just reading and taking notes. Then I condensed my notes at least twice more and drew on them to create chapters for my book. The original spiritual memoir was almost four times longer than the final product. I actually had two books in my original draft. Divinely Inspired is nonfiction, and it is conceivable that the second book will be a fiction based upon my experiences not included in the first book."
