OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born October 12, 1926, in Paterson, NJ; died November 14, 2004, in Clifton, OH. Reines was a Jewish philosophy professor at Hebrew Union College. After receiving his M.A.H.L. at Hebrew Union College in 1952, he completed a Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1958. He joined Hebrew Union in 1959 as an assistant professor and later became a full professor. An authority on Maimonides, he was the author of Maimonides and Abrabanel on Prophecy (1970). A liberal philosopher, he advocated for the ordination of female rabbis and the importance of keeping an open mind about other theological and philosophical beliefs. Among his other publications are Elements in Philosophy of Reform Judaism (1972) and Polydoxy: Explorations in a Philosophy of Liberal Religion (1987).
