SIDELIGHTS:

In her first novel, Pick Me Up, Zoë Rice tells the story of Izzy Duncan, an art gallery director who is in danger of losing her job at the Emerson Bond Gallery when her boss dies and she accidentally offends a famous artist. In the meantime, her new boss is handsome, sophisticated and, Izzy believes, may be just the man for her. In a subplot, Izzy's friend Jamie writes a newspaper column telling New York men that they have to use good pick-up lines if they want to be successful with women. Each chapter of the book begins with a pick-up line. "In college, I spent a semester studying art history in London," Rice told Ann Cooke in an interview on the Romance Review Today Web site. "I developed a real passion for modern and contemporary art, and I wanted to bring New York's glamorous art world to life on the page. At the same time, I also enjoy the kind of guffaw a good pick up line can give you." Referring to Pick Me Up as an "enjoyable debut." in a review in Booklist, Aleksandra Kostovski went on to note that the book has both a "Sex in the City vibe … and a sentimental side." A Trashionista Web site contributor wrote: "There are laugh-out-loud moments and an enormously romantic ending."
