SIDELIGHTS:

Patricia Schultz had been an avid traveler and travel writer for years before landing on the best-seller lists with her book 1,000 Places to See before You Die, which has sold more than two million copies since its 2003 publication. The listings, each about a page in length, span the globe and include every imaginable type of attraction: natural wonders, theme parks, museums, restaurants, historical sites, boardwalks, and even experiences. Chaim Estulin in Time International found it "as provocative as it is encyclopedic," with "lively" descriptions as well as details such as prices and telephone numbers that make it "an insightful travel primer." Library Journal contributor Rachel Collins deemed the lack of color photographs one of the book's "few faults" but nonetheless concluded that "this all-encompassing tome makes for an excellent travel source for novice, pleasure, and vocation travelers." Characterizing it as "straightforward, user-friendly and more," Christopher Dickey in Newsweek International said that 1,000 Places to See before You Die "tells you what's beautiful, what's inspiring, and what's just unforgettable everywhere on earth."
