See index for CA sketch: Born January 14, 1932, in London, England; died of heart failure, July 11, 2007. Philosopher, educator, and author. Sprigge once told CA that his work as a philosopher was devoted to "the nature of reality" rather than the study of abstract concepts and semantics. He taught at the University of London in the early 1960s, then at the University of Sussex from 1963 to 1979. He moved to the University of Edinburgh in 1979, where he was named a professor emeritus of logic and metaphysics in 1990. Sprigge's writings include Santayana: An Examination of His Philosophy (1983), The Vindication of Absolute Idealism (1983), Theories of Existence (1984), The Rational Foundations of Ethics (1988), and James and Bradley: American Truth and British Reality (1993).
