STAMBUK, George 1927-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born May 24, 1927, in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now Croatia); died of complications from heart bypass surgery December 2, 2004, in Alexandria, VA. Educator and author. Stambuk was a former professor of international relations at George Washington University. Before World War II caused him to flee his native country, he completed a B.A. in 1939 and a law degree in 1943 at the University of Zagreb. Once in America, he attended Indiana University, where he studied political science and earned an M.A. in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1961. He remained in Indiana for a time, teaching government at the university before going to Newport, Rhode Island, to teach at the Naval War College. In 1966 he joined the George Washington University faculty as an associate professor. He rose to the position of full professor of international relations, retiring in 1991. Stambuk contributed to professional journals and wrote books about Eastern Europe and American military action abroad. His two publications are American Military Forces Abroad: Their Impact on the Western State System (1963) and Eastern European Government and Politics (1966), the latter of which he wrote with Andrew Gyorgy and Vaclav Benes.
