SIDELIGHTS: Stephen Stuebner is a freelance writer who often writes about the outdoors. He has also collaborated with photographer Mark W. Lisk for the "coffee table" books Idaho Impressions and Salmon River Country. The latter book focuses on the largely unspoiled wilderness area in Idaho that covers nearly as much area as the state of Ohio. Commenting on Salmon River Country in an interview with Jeanne Huff for the Idaho Statesman, Stuebner noted: "I thought it would be good to put a face to the Salmon River country by profiling some of the Salmon River legends." Among these legends are such notables as musician and composer Carole King. The book also includes stories about colorful Idaho locals, such as Sheila Mills, who is known as the "Dutch Oven Queen" for her idea of making casseroles for eating on river-rafting trips. Stuebner also provides general nature essays about the area, and the book includes more than one hundred photographs by Lisk. Jo-Anne Mary Benson, writing in the Library Journal, called the book a "delightful work," while a Wisconsin Bookwatch contributor wrote that the book is "a true and highly recommended treat for the armchair traveler." The reviewer added that the book could also be used to help plan an adventure vacation. Commenting on the book in the Idaho Statesman, Huff wrote: "The book is peppered throughout with stories amid the breathtaking photographs. It feels as if the reader is actually floating, backpacking or skiing, taking a breather here and there to chat with the locals."
