PERSONAL: Born November 10, 1933, in Cincinnati, OH; son of John Hoxland (an accountant) and Christine (Seebaun) White. Education: Miami University, Oxford, OH, B.A., 1958.

CAREER: Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History, Washington, DC, began as museum aide, became associate curator, 1958-67, curator of transportation, 1967-90, chair of Department of Industries in the 1970s, and senior historian; Miami University, Oxford, OH, member of history faculty, 1996—. Lecturer at University of Pennsylvania, 1966, University of California, 1970, and University of Moscow, 1973; Science Museum, London, England, fellow, 1983, 1984. Consultant, Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum, 1968-90, and California State Railroad Museum, 1970-90. Also worked as a mechanic and drafter.

MEMBER: Railway and Locomotive Historical Society, Society for the History of Technology, Cincinnati Historical Society.
