SIDELIGHTS: Richard H. Wilkinson draws upon his expertise as an archaeologist to write books about ancient Egypt's architecture, hieroglyphics, mythology, and art. Wilkinson's "Complete" books in particular are written for general readers, but they are also of value to more serious students in the field. Library Journal correspondent Mary Morgan Smith found The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt an "indispensable work for a student of Egyptian life or architecture." In her Journal of Near Eastern Studies review of The Complete Valley of the Kings: Tombs and Treasures of Egypt's Greatest Pharaohs, Catharine Roehrig wrote: "The principal value of this book is that it brings together in one volume a wide variety of sources, providing information not easily accessible or widely known to the general reader or even to Egyptologists who do not specialize in the subject matter." Antiquity reviewers Timothy Taylor and Cyprian Broodbank felt that Reading Egyptian Art: A Hieroglyphic Guide to Ancient Egyptian Painting and Sculpture is "accessible and delightful—a book that could easily gain converts to Ancient Egypt."
