OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born September 26, 1924, in Kiel, Germany; died September 29, 2004, in Los Angeles, CA. Author. Wincelberg was best known as a television script writer, though he also published plays. After immigrating to the United States, he served in combat intelligence for the U.S. Army 27th Division during World War II. Returning to America, he attended the Manhattan Technical Institute for a year, as well as Providence College. His writing career began as an author of short stories, which he contributed to such magazines as Harper's Bazaar, Punch, New Leader, and the New Yorker. Wincelberg then began finding success writing for television in the 1950s, contributing to such shows as Mannix, Gunsmoke, Star Trek, Lost in Space, Route 66, and, more recently, Law & Order. Outside of his television career, he had two plays produced: Kataki (1959) and The Windows of Heaven (1969). He was also the author of The Samurai of Vishogrod: The Notebooks of Jacob Marateck (1976), which he wrote with his wife, and The Utopian Chronicles (1982).
