SIDELIGHTS:
Kate Wood, former editor of Get Fresh!, the leading magazine for raw foods advocates, had been a raw vegetarian for more then ten years when she wrote Eat Smart, Eat Raw: Creative Vegetarian Recipes for a Healthier Life. The book is a guide to raw foods vegetarianism that includes advice on buying, storing, and preparing various dishes, as well as information on nutrition. Some recipes require the use of special equipment, such as a food dehydrator or juicer, but the 150 recipes are not difficult to prepare and offer a wide selection of raw food choices for vegetarians, vegans, and others who would like to sample the healthy offerings. The book is organized into chapters that focus on breakfasts, desserts, salads, and other categories similar to a standard cookbook. Recipes include Avocado Pudding, Carrot Cake Salad, Apple Crumble, and Cheesy Stuffed Peppers. Library Journal reviewer Meagan Storey wrote: "Wood's instructions are clear and concise; her tone is friendly and encouraging." A Publishers Weekly contributor concluded that "this book will cheer the hearts and expand the culinary repertoire of vegans and raw dieters."
