SIDELIGHTS:
Waldemar Zacharasiewicz is an academic. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Graz in Austria in 1967 and remained in academia. By 1973 he was a lecturer at the University of Graz. The following year he was made a full professor of English and American studies at the University of Vienna in Austria. He later became director of the university's Canadian Studies Center. Zacharasiewicz has contributed a number of articles to scholarly journals and periodicals and served as a visiting professor or scholar at a number of universities in the United States.
Zacharasiewicz published his first book, Die "Cosmic Voyage" und die "Excursion" in der Englischen Dichtung des 17 und 18 Jahrhunderts, in 1969. This was followed in 1977 with Die Klimatheorie in der Englischen Literatur und Literaturkritik von der Mitte des 16 bis zum Frühen 18 Jahrhundert. He edited Encounters and Explorations: Canadian Writers and European Critics in 1986 with Franz K. Stanzel.
In 1993 Zacharasiewicz edited Tales and "Their Telling Difference": Zur Theorie und Geschichte der Narrativik, Festschrift zum 70 Geburtstag von Franz K. Stanzel with Herbert Foltinek and Wolfgang Riehle. The book is a compilation of essays on the works of Franz K. Stanzel, focusing primarily on narrative theory. Erika Swales, writing in the Modern Language Review, called several of the reviews contributed to this volume "affectionate" and "thoughtful."
It was in the 1990s that Zacharasiewicz started publishing more books in English. Images of Central Europe in Travelogues and Fiction by North American Writers was released in 1995. In 1999 he published Remembering the Individual/Regional/National Past with Michael Draxlbauer. He edited The Many Souths: Class in Southern Culture on his own in 2003. And he published Images of Germany in American Literature in 2007.
