tonometer (toh-nom-it-er) n.
1. (ophthalmotonometer) an instrument for measuring pressure inside the eye. Goldman applanation t. a tonometer that measures the force required to flatten an area of cornea 3 mm2. A greater force is required when the pressure inside the eye is increased.

2. an instrument for measuring pressure in any other part of the body.
