Sidelights

Australian Terry Denton is a popular and prolific illustrator of books for young readers. Recognized for his playful, brightly colored, cartoon-style art, Denton has collaborated with such writers as Paul Jennings, Ted Greenwood, Gillian Rubinstein, Margaret Clark, and Andrew Daddo. In addition, he has published a number of self-illustrated titles, such as the books in the "Storymaze" series of graphic novels. Denton's works have won numerous awards, including the Children's Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year for Felix and Alexander.

Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Denton grew up in a large, raucous household that helped fuel his active imagination. "Trained from childhood in a home of five boys and a mad mother; humour was our ritual," he recalled to Children's Book Council of Australia Web site interviewer Anna McFarlane. "As a child I read humour, watched humour and listened to humour: Goons, Bugs Bunny Show, Daffy Duck. This was the culture of my childhood." After studying architecture in college, Denton tried his hand at acting and animation before concentrating on illustration. He made his literary debut in 1983, providing the artwork for Max Dann's Going Bananas. When Denton illustrates a book, he enters a particular mindset that involves "playing, inventing, free association/lateral thinking … just the way I did as a kid … taking an idea and running with it," as he told McFarlane. "I have been lucky that I found a job that allowed me to use that seemingly useless skill to make a living."

Denton has enjoyed enduring partnerships with several authors, including fellow Australian Mem Fox. For the picture book A Particular Cow, Denton and Fox "worked … as a team, pulling the story apart and rebuilding it over a period of thirteen years," the illustrator recalled to McFarlane. "She kept simplifying the text until it was absolutely minimal." In the work, a bovine taking her customary Saturday stroll loses her way and wreaks havoc in her village. According to a critic in Publishers Weekly, Denton's "action-packed watercolors considerably amplify the book's comic delight." As School Library Journal critic Marge Loch-Wauters remarked, the book's "cartoon illustrations bounce with energy and are suffused with warm colors."

Denton has also teamed with writer Andy Griffiths on such works as The Cat on the Mat Is Flat. In his interview with McFarlane, Denton called this picture book "a true collaboration. We worked together in the same room, Andy on computer, me at a drawing desk. I would draw a character, [and] we would both look at it and work out ways to make it work better." Told in verse, The Cat on the Mat Is Flat features a number of wacky characters that survive hair-raising situations. "Denton's edgy, stick-figure-filled sketches enhance the zaniness factor and the offbeat, ironic humor," a Publishers Weekly critic noted.

Although Denton has found considerable success with Fox and Griffiths, the creative process he employs while working with those authors is not a typical one. "A lot of my collaborations have been with minimal input from the author, which I like," the illustrator told McFarlane. "A good writer shouldn't need to talk to the illustrator," he continued. "All they need to communicate should be in the text. The greatest skill of an illustrator is to read the text and pick up the threads of what the writer is on about."

While beloved as an artist, Denton has also earned acclaim for his self-illustrated works, including The Ultimate Wave, The Eye of Ulam, and other "Storymaze" titles, a series of "wacky adventures studded with puns and literary riffs that alternate between narrative and

comics format," observed Booklist contributor Francisca Goldsmith. Kliatt reviewer Lynne Remick applauded Denton's efforts, stating that his "illustrations prove as wonderfully weird as his text."

In an essay on the Pan Macmillan Australia Web site, Denton stated: "In my writing and illustrating I suppose the two things that interest me most are human emotions and the wonderful, pointless detail of our existence. We're a weird race. Oh! … and colour … three things."
