Sidelights

A Canadian picture-book illustrator, Claudine Gévry studied graphic design at the University of Quebec, and then briefly worked as a designer for television before finding her niche in children's books. Her use of bright colors and cozy, round shapes, as well as her creation of endearing characters, give her art instant toddler appeal, and her illustration projects include many board-book titles. In addition to her work as a picture-book illustrator, where her images have been paired with

simple texts by writers such as Crystal Bowman, Dandi Daley Mackall, and Allia Zobel Nolan, Gévry serves as an art director for animation at the Film Board of Canada and also enjoys designing furniture and jewelry.

Calling Gévry's illustrations "richly colored" and noting her incorporation of foil accents within the pages, Carolyn Phelan wrote in her Booklist review of Mackall's Seeing Stars that "warm colors, simplified shapes, and rounded lines give … [the book's] outdoor scenes a cozy look." Megan McDonald's Daisy Jane, Best-ever Flower Girl, an easy reader about a girl whose dream of participating in a real wedding finally comes true, features "rounded forms and warm colors [that] give the pages an inviting look," according to Phelan. Another book featuring Gévry's art, Tanya Lee Stone's holiday abecederium M Is for Mistletoe: A Christmas Alphabet Book contains "softly textured pictures with cozy appeal," according to School Library Journal contributor Susan Patron.
