Sidelights

English-born author Rosemary Hayes currently juggles her writing career with consultancy work. With her background in advertising, marketing, and publishing, Hayes had always written plenty of slogans; when she launched into children's fiction with her first novel, 1988's Race against Time was runner up for the Kathleen Fidler Award.

Since that first success, Hayes has authored numerous other books, among them several for beginning readers, such as The Gremlin Buster, Holly and the Dream Fixer, and Follow That Lion,! She has also written many books for older readers, including the historical novels The Fox in the Wood, Mission from the Marsh: King Alfred and the Vikings, and The Flight of the Mallard. She has also written a trilogy comprised of Troubled Waters, The Edge of the Ocean, and Bright Horizon. Alternating between England and Australia, Hayes' story begins in nineteenth-century London and follows the fortunes of one family across the centuries and over the oceans in a fast-paced tale involving deceit, devotion, and tragedy. January Online reviewer Sue Bursztynski, while noting that The Edge of the Ocean reads best as part of the series rather than on its own, called the novel "easy reading" and suggested that the book would "appeal to young fans of historical fiction."
