Sidelights

A prolific artist, Stéphane Jorisch has illustrated children's books for authors ranging from Lewis Carroll to Bertrand Gauthier to Pat Brisson. In 2001 he expanded his role to author as well when he produced the self-illustrated adaptation As for the Princess?: A Folktale from Québec. In addition to his work for picture books, the French-Canadian artist has also created images for magazines such as Le Monde Salon and produced graphic designs for the popular Cirque du Soleil.

While growing up, Jorisch was strongly influenced by his father, an illustrator for European newspapers. On the Annick Press Web site, he explained that, for him, both "curiosity and a keen sense of observation" are important characteristics for a would-be writer and illustrator. While ideas for his illustrations often comes from daily things, the artist's greatest inspiration is drawn from "people and their environment," as Jorisch noted in an online interview for Embracing the Child. "I love drawing people—big, small or weird—and cre-

ating the worlds they live in. In terms of illustrated books, weaving the images together to make each spread work with the previous spread is an inspiring challenge."

Jorisch frequently uses pen and ink, gouache, and water color in creating his illustrations, and many critics have commented on his talent for accentuating the most telling elements in each author's text. For example, in his work for Pat Brisson's I Remember Miss Perry he sensitively deals with the sudden death of a elementary school teacher and the sorrow of the young students she leaves behind. A Kirkus Reviews critic noted of the book that Jorisch's "subtle watercolor" illustrations "effectively evoke the emotions of the characters without overpowering the text."

Jorisch's artwork has also been acknowledged for its delicacy, an attribute the artist perfects through the use of transparent water color and soft-toned pastel crayon. His controlled use of line allows him to capture, with a gesture, the happiness, sadness, and other feelings expressed via facial expressions. Writing in School Library Journal, Mary Elam noted that Jorisch's illustrations for I Remember Miss Perry "reflect the varied emotions evoked" by Brisson's young characters.
