First prize, Nazionale Val Vibrata al Martinsicuro, 1997, and Premio Europeo di Letteratura distinction, 1999, both for Viaggio nella notte blu; Premio Espace Enfants honor, 1998, Smithsonian magazine Notable Books for Children designation and White Ravens Award distinction, both 1999, first prize, Paese di Giotto Bambino a Vicchio, and Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People designation, National Council for the Social Studies/Children's Book Council, both 2000, and Japan Picture Book Award, 2001, all for Un bambino di nome Giotto/ A Boy Named Giotto.
