Sidelights
An impulsive act has intended consequences in Josh Schneider's self-illustrated picture-book debut, You'll Be Sorry. In the work, readers are introduced to Samantha, a tiny mouse who enjoys antagonizing her little brother. Although her parents warn Samantha not to hit her defenseless sibling, she cannot resist the temptation. After he is struck, however, Samantha's brother begins crying uncontrollably. His tears soon flood the room, then the house, and finally the neighborhood, forcing the family to spend the night in a rowboat, nibbling on soggy crackers. When Samantha realizes the error of her ways, she must comfort her sibling while also resisting the urge to give him a sly pinch.
You'll Be Sorry garnered strong critical praise. Schneider's "watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings work nicely to enhance this humorous cautionary tale," remarked School Library Journal contributor Shelley B. Sutherland, and Ilene Cooper, writing in Booklist, similarly noted that Schneider's "clever take on the push-pull of sibling relationships gets a charming boost from the [author/illustrator's] pen-and-watercolor illustrations."
