Sidelights
One of Australia's most prolific children's book illustrators, Craig Smith's works number in the hundreds and reflect his wry humor, playful take on perspective, and his family-oriented childhood. Working for a variety of publishers, he has created cartoon art featuring his characteristic pop-eyed characters for texts by such writers as Mem Fox, Emily Rodda, and Paul Jennings, mostly in the picture-book and beginning-reader genre. His artwork also appears in Phil Kettle's sports-oriented "Toocool" book series, winner of Australia's child-selected KOALA award and a hit with reluctant readers.
Born near Adelaide, South Australia, Smith was raised in an industrious middle-class family where an interest in the arts was encouraged. As he once told SATA: "I have an older sister, Maire, who has always been passionate about drawing. My parents were involved in a family business selling footwear in two neighbouring towns. Woodside has an army barracks and was the biggest influence on my playtime. With a few friends we spent day after day involved in pretend combat, often kitted out from the local dump, which the Army used. My earliest remembered ambition was to be a cartoonist. I spent a lot of time copying Walt Disney characters. Nonetheless, going into the early teens I seriously wanted to make a career in either Army or Navy. My sister went to the South Australian School of Art (now Torrens College of Advanced Education). It was through her that the interesting world of graphic design was opened to me. I followed in her footsteps."
While working toward his design degree, Smith studied illustration under George Tetlow and, on the strength of a large class project, "sent slides of the drawings to a number of publishers, from which came an invitation to provide roughs for a book. This was Christobel Mattingley's text for Black Dog." Embarking on his career as a freelance illustrator following graduation in 1976, he also spent eight years taking on a variety of part-time jobs, including as a dishwasher, a bridge-maintenance worker, and a nurse's aid for a hospital for the elderly, the last which allowed him to observe the human figure in many different positions. In addition to book illustrations, Smith has created advertising art, done animation, and has designed several Australian postage stamps.
As Smith noted in an Angus & Robinson publicity release, he enjoys illustrating children's books "because of the freedom to develop the character of the book, as well as the characters in the book. Children's books offer a good scope for humour and satire, both of which I love to use." As Smith added, reading to his own children was enlightening: "Good books are far more than good pictures, it's the synthesis of text and image that's important."
