Sidelights

French illustrator Olivier Tallec has been working on children's books since 1997, and has illustrated approximately thirty titles in France, several of which have also been released in the United States. Talec studied both visual and applied arts, attended the École Duperré in Paris, France, and has contributed art work to magazines, including Libération and Elle. He is also the author of the self-illustrated picture book Noël dans le ciel.

Tallec's illustrations have accompanied traditional tales and original stories. In a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina of Toulaba, Tallec's "striking illustrations … inventively present the world through Thumbelina's perspective," wrote a contributor to Kirkus Reviews. Noting that the reteller gives the tale a Caribbean flare, Donna Cardon wrote in School Library Journal that "Tallec's bold, stylized illustrations reflect the exotic feel of the text."

Tallec has provided the illustrations for three titles by Claire Babin that focus on an imaginative boy named Gustave. Two of the tales (published in the United States as Gus Is a Fish and Gus Is a Tree) combine mixed-media and acrylic images with photography. For This Is a Poem That Heals Fish, by Jean-Pierre Siméon, Tallec contributes "stylized, simplified color paintings," according to a Children's Bookwatch critic. Tallec's "imaginative fauvist illustrations capture the fanciful, free mood" wrote a contributor to Kirkus Reviews. A Publishers Weekly critic described Tallec's contributions to Siméon's story as composed of "delicate pencil lines and wet strokes of vibrant color."
