Ariss, John
Ariss, John (c.1725–99). English-born architect, who settled in Maryland c.1751, and who seems to have been the first, or one of the first, professional architects to work in the American Colonies. Steeped in English Palladianism and in the architectural language of James Gibbs, he was probably responsible for some of the more imposing Virginian houses, such as Mount Airey, Richmond County.
