Bateman, James
Bateman, James (1811–97). English botanist and landowner, who became an authority on orchids. In the early 1840s he purchased an estate at Biddulph Moor, near Knypersley, Staffs., and there built Biddulph Grange, around which he created a remarkable garden which includes allusions to China and ancient Egypt, among other places. The Egyptian garden is a place of extraordinary atmosphere and power.
