Clarke, George Somers Leigh (1825–82). British architect. A pupil of Charles Barry, he was an ingenious designer of office buildings on restricted sites. His General Credit and Discount Company Building, Lothbury, London (1866), is an attractive composition in a Venetian Gothic style, but he was equally fluent in Cinquecento, Elizabethan, François Ier, and Oriental styles. One of his best houses was Wyfold Court, Oxon (1873–4). His nephew, George Somers Clarke (1841–1926), was also an architect, among whose works is Holy Trinity Church, Ardington, Berks. (1887): he was in partnership (1876–92) with Micklethwaite.
