Domènech i Montaner, Lluís
Domènech i Montaner, Lluís (1850–1923). With Gaudí the most inventive practitioner of Modernisme, the Catalan variant on Art Nouveau at the turn of C19 in Spain. He drew on Romanesque and Gothic themes as well as the ideas of Viollet-le-Duc, and as early as 1878 published an article in which he argued for a specifically national Catalan architecture that would be a transformation of eclecticism into something new, yet distinctive, clearly an early manifestation of Critical Regionalism. His café-restaurant for the Barcelona Universal Exposition (1887–8) drew on medieval models, but in the Palau de la Música Catalana (1905–8), Barcelona, he drew on modern technology with a structure of interlaced iron to produce his master-work.
