Goldie, George

Goldie, George (1828–87). English architect. The grandson of Joseph Bonomi, he was articled to, and later a partner of, the RC architects Hadfield & Weightman in Sheffield before setting up his own practice from 1861, later joined by Charles Edwin Child (1843–1911) and his son Edward. His Churches include the heavy Gothic Revival St Wilfred's, York (1862–4), the Abbey of St Scholastica, Teignmouth, Devon (1863), St Augustine's, Stamford, Lincs. (1864), the Assumption, Kensington Square, London (1875), and St Joseph's, Durban, South Africa (1878), in all of which Continental, rather than English, Gothic was dominant.
