Hughes, James Quentin

Hughes, James Quentin (1920–2004). English architect, founding editor of the journal Fort, and a leading preservationist of fortresses. He also worked on numerous conservation projects, including Bridge Street, Chester (1962–4), Neston, Wirral (1967), and Greenbank House, Sefton Park, Liverpool (1969). He published The Buildings of Malta 1530–1795 (1956), Seaport: Architecture and Town Planning in Liverpool (1964—later published as Liverpool: City of Architecture), Fortress: Architecture and Military History in Malta (1969), and Military Architecture (1974). He did much for the historic architecture of Liverpool.
