Ittar, Henryk
Ittar, Henryk (1773–1850). Polish Neo-Classical architect of Italian extraction. He designed several of the fabriques in the garden of allusions at Arkadia, near Nieborów, Poland, including the Circus (1801) and Amphitheatre (c.1805) influenced by Piranesi's visionary engravings. The Circus perhaps alluded to the Imperial Palace on the Palatine Hill, Rome (ad C1), but was otherwise unprecedented in European gardens. He was also responsible for the Isle of Poplars (complete with Rousseauesque ‘tomb’) on the axis of the Circus. Some of his designs for buildings at Arkadia are among the most advanced severe conceptions of their time.
