Community Environment:

Atlanta, host of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, offers students the best of the Sun Belt: long, bright, crisp fall and spring seasons with short and mild winters in the largest cosmopolitan center in the Southeast. With one of the fastest-growing economies in the nation, Atlanta today is a city bursting with newness and enormous energy while still retaining its traditions and flavor. Home to Art Papers, the city has a flourishing "grass roots" art scene, an optimal environment for the emerging artist or designer. Atlanta has scores of galleries and alternative spaces that exhibit a broad variety of artwork; a ballet and an opera; numerous movie houses showing new releases and foreign and classic films; a growing number of theater companies, large and small; many opportunities for rock, jazz, and avant-garde music; and outdoor performances and art festivals. In addition, Atlanta has a myriad of natural areas and parks, restaurants of every description, and three professional sports teams. The Atlanta College of Art is located in midtown, the cultural heart of the city, a neighborhood where skyscrapers soar above tree-lined streets filled with restored older residences, some dating from the Victorian era. The Arts Center station of MARTA, Atlanta's clean and efficient rapid transit system, is located just across the street from the College residence hall and offers easy access to many points of interest.
