Also eligible are students who are living with friends or relatives temporarily because they lack permanent housing. Applicants must be high school seniors, students enrolled in GED or other alternative education programs, or students who recently obtained their diploma or GED certificate. They must submit an essay of at least 500 words about the impact of homelessness on their lives and their desire to attend college. Selection is based on demonstrated commitment to education during the experience of homelessness, academic achievement, discussion of how the scholarship would be used to help advance the desire to attend college, statement of goals, use of language, and organization of essay. Transportation costs to training sites off the reservation are provided for the student and eligible family members. Medical coverage is provided by the Northern Cheyenne Indian Health Service for the duration of the training period. Duration: Up to 24 months for vocational training; up to 36 months for nursing training.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled members of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, be between the ages of 18 and 40, be high school graduates or have obtained a high school equivalency before applying, and be enrolled or accepted in a Bureau of Indian Affairs-approved school. Northern Cheyennes are not required to reside on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation; other eligible Indian members may qualify for this assistance if they reside on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. The applicant must intend to enroll in a full-time trade or vocational program that can be completed in 3 to 24 months and that will prepare the student for employment. Selection is based on academic achievement, educational goals, need for financial support, choice of school, and plans after graduation. Awards are made according to the following priorities: 1) renewal of grants to continuing students in good standing; 2) new applicants who are enrolled Northern Cheyenne residing on or near the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation; 3) enrolled Northern Cheyenne new applicants who reside outside the service area of the reservation; 4) other Indian enrolled tribal members residing on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation; and 5) individuals requesting retraining. Deadline for Receipt: February of each year for fall quarter/semester; September of each year for winter quarter/spring semester/spring quarter; March of each year for summer school. Additional Information: Individuals can request support for retraining, provided they can supply a physician's statement explaining why they cannot continue in their present occupation. Recipients must complete at least 12 units each semester or quarter with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Recipients who voluntarily discontinue training without prior approval from the tribe or because of poor attendance or academic performance are not eligible for continued financial assistance.

1122 NORTHERN CHEYENNE

To provide financial assistance for college or graduate school to Northern Cheyenne tribal members.

Title of Award: Northern Cheyenne Higher Education Scholarship Program Area, Field, or Subject: General studies/Field of study not specified Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Number Awarded: Approximately 80 each year. Funds Available: The stipend depends on the need of the recipient, to a maximum of $6,000 per year. These awards are intended to supplement other available sources of funding. The scholarship must be used for tuition, subsistence, required fees, and textbooks. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed if the recipient maintains a GPA of 2.0 or higher and completes at least 14 quarter or 16 semester units as a freshman and sophomore and at least 16 quarter or 18 semester units as a junior or senior.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to enrolled Northern Cheyenne tribal members who have been accepted to a degree program at an accredited college or university. The priority order for awards is 1) continuing and former college students in good standing; 2) graduating high school seniors in good standing or first-time adult college applicants not previously funded; 3) students or other individuals who have previously failed to meet the requirements of the scholarship program; and 4) graduate students (if funds are still available). All applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need. Deadline for Receipt: February of each year for fall quarter/semester; September of each year for winter quarter/spring semester/spring quarter; March of each year for summer school. Additional Information: Recipients who reside in Montana are expected to attend a postsecondary institution in the state. They must pay the difference in cost between Montana public postsecondary schools and private or out-of-state schools, if they elect to attend either of those. An exception is made if no comparable course of study exists in a Montana public institution. Eligible Northern Cheyenne Indians residing out of state are subject to the same regulation; however, they may enroll in a Montana institution of higher learning if there is no comparable course of study at a public institution in their home state.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to women who have been active members of a church affiliated with the Northwest Baptist Convention and a member of the Woman's Missionary Union within their church. Special consideration is given to children of ministers from the Northwest. Applicants must be attending or planning to attend an accredited college, university, or Southern Baptist seminary with the intention of serving in a vocational ministry position through a church or denomination; priority is given to applicants going into a mission vocation affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Along with their application, they must submit 1) a written account of their conversion experience and their call to vocational ministry; and 2) a written endorsement from their church.
