Special Message
Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) now offers accredited classes through a variety of technologies for students who may not be able to come to the campus.
Compressed video courses are instructed at one site and simultaneously sent to distant sites in Tennessee. Students and instructors can see one another on television monitors and talk to one another using microphones. Telecourses are offered via cable television or videotape. Students can view course segments on the MTSU cable channel or the local PBS affiliate or at the MTSU McWherter Learning Resources Center. Students consult with their instructors during telephone office hours or through e-mail. Students are required to attend an orientation, a midterm exam, and a final exam on campus.
Correspondence courses involve individual instruction of a student by an instructor. Typically, students study at home. Interaction between correspondence course faculty members and students consists of written assignments, testing, and assistance via such media as print/written word, telephone, fax, e-mail, and the World Wide Web. After registration, students receive a packet in the mail from the correspondence course coordinator, containing information about assignments and directions for completing and submitting them.
Online courses are taught primarily over the Internet through e-mail, newsgroups, distribution lists, and the World Wide Web. MTSU offers online Bachelor of Science degree programs in liberal studies and in professional studies with concentrations in information technology and organizational leadership as well as a Master of Education degree. These various distance learning programs are closing the gap between students and the campus.
