Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy Distance Learning Program

New York, New York

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

Each semester, the Milano Graduate School offers between six and twenty classes totally or partially online in a variety of programs, concentrations, and content clusters. The courses are offered as options to provide more flexibility for students. The courses are taught by both full-time and adjunct faculty members.

DELIVERY MEDIA

Courses are offered over the New School University Online platform, which features e-mail, discussion boards, chat, whiteboard, file sharing, calendar, and an announcements feature. Instructors typically use asynchronous elements for the majority of their courses to allow a "learning anywhere, anytime" atmosphere to take place. Students and faculty members correspond by telephone, mail, fax, e-mail, and face to face.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

While Milano does not offer an entire graduate degree online, students can complete a significant portion of the nonprofit management, health services management, or human resources management programs online.

Most online classes engage students in facilitated discussions that sometimes include industry leaders as guests and resources. Instructors offer lectures and discussion questions to which students can respond any-time within a few days. The School encourages students to respond to each other, and the dialogues in online classes are educationally and professionally enriching.

Online courses are typically shorter in length than traditional face-to-face courses, usually eight to ten academic weeks, versus the fifteen-week structure of most traditional courses. Though they are shorter, the online classes are comparable in quality to traditional courses. Typically, online courses contain no more than 15 students per instructor.

Milano siteline courses blend online and face-to-face teaching, so students can get the flexibility of the online environment, yet see fellow class members. Some siteline courses substitute online sessions for face-to-face sessions, which means fewer trips to the campus during the semester.

The School encourages innovative teaching models that provide high levels of interaction and connect theory to practice. To this end, instructors have attracted industry leaders as guest speakers or resources for extended periods of time, provided online space for students to bring topical resources to the class, and engaged students in professional group settings where they can practice their leadership and project-management skills.

Milano has provided more than forty-five classes online since 1996. While not all of these classes are offered online every semester, Milano makes available between eight and twenty classes online per semester. To learn more about these classes, applicants should look at the course descriptions on the program's Web site listed at the end of this description; current Milano students should contact their program or faculty adviser.
