Lester G. Benz Memorial Scholarships for College Journalism Study (Other/Scholarship)

Purpose: To identify and reward experienced journalism teachers and publication advisers who seek the opportunity to upgrade journalism skills, teaching methodologies and advising techniques. Focus: Journalism. Qualif.: Applicants must be high-school journalism teachers and newspaper and yearbook advisers who have had at least six semester hours of journalism courses; a minimum of four years of teaching experience and advising school publications; currently teaching a journalistic writing class; and a definite commitment to return to the high school classroom and publication. Criteria: Candidates will be selected by Scholarship Committee.

Funds Avail.: $500 for actual tuition, room, board and transportation costs. To Apply: Applicants must submit the completed application form, two letters of recommendation that will attest to their journalism teaching skills, publication advising, quality of the journalistic writing courses the applicants teach and the quality of the publications the applicant advises. Deadline: April 15.

Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to well-qualified individuals to attend any college or university that offers a major in journalism. Focus: Journalism. Qualif.: Applicant must be a student in freshman year. Criteria: Recipient will be selected based on some criteria designed by the Scholarship Committee.

Funds Avail.: $500 to $1,500. To Apply: Applicant must submit three separate forms (Form I - Principal or Counselor, Form II - Student and Form III - Journalism Adviser) together with the supporting material (official transcript, applicant's letter regarding journalistic experience, and five selections of student's published work and letters of endorsement from principal, counselor and/or adviser). Deadline: May 10.
