Distance Learning Program

Delivery Media

Students and faculty members exchange ideas and collaborate with their colleagues through e-mail, online courses, study teams, and, in some programs, face-to-face residency sessions. Individual mentoring, online courses, and progress based on demonstrations of knowledge are among the components of Walden's delivery system. Students who enroll in a Walden program should be comfortable using a personal computer, a word processor, and e-mail.

Programs of Study

The Ph.D. in applied management and decision sciences program offers an interdisciplinary approach that prepares students to advance the knowledge and practice of management and leadership. Students can complete a general program or a self-designed program or specialize in engineering management, finance, information systems management, knowledge management, leadership and organizational change, learning management, or operations research.

The Ph.D. in education program produces leaders who can address the nation's most pressing educational challenges. Options include a general program; specializations in adult education leadership, community college leadership, early childhood education, educational technology, higher education, K–12 educational leadership, and special education; and a self-designed program.

The Ph.D. in health services program prepares students to serve at the forefront of the design and delivery of cutting-edge health services in the private and public sectors. General study is available, as are a self-designed specialization and specializations in community health, health and human behavior, health management and policy, and health promotion and education.

The Ph.D. in human services program prepares students to serve at the forefront of the design and delivery of cutting-edge public services and to excel within a diverse service-delivery system. Students may design a specialization or specialize in clinical social work, counseling, criminal justice, family studies and intervention strategies, human services administration, or social policy analysis and planning.

The Ph.D. in public health program focuses on seeking solutions to significant public health problems and applying and integrating new knowledge into public health research and practice settings. Specializations are available in community health promotion and education and in epidemiology.

The Ph.D. in psychology program prepares psychology professionals to fully excel in today's health-care settings, private practices, and global industries. Specializations include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, general psychology (with tracks in educational psychology and in research and evaluation), health psychology, organizational psychology, and school psychology.

The Ph.D. in public policy and administration program prepares students to meet the challenges of governance and effective service delivery. Specializations include e-government, emergency response policy and coordination, health services, international nongovernmental organizations, knowledge management, nonprofit management and leadership, public management and leadership, public policy, and public safety management.

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program has specializations in teacher leadership and in administrator leadership for teaching and learning. Both are designed for K–12 educators who want to continue their practice while assuming leadership roles in their schools and communities.

The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) offers students new insights and comprehensive cross-discipline skills to meet the complex issues and challenges of the global economy. Students may choose a general program or select from several specializations: e-business, finance, global business, health services, human resource management, knowledge/learning management, management of technology, marketing, nonprofit management, and risk management/insurance.

The Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program prepares public/non-profit professionals to excel in today's complex, politicized, inter-sector environment. Specializations include e-government, emergency response policy and coordination, health services, international nongovernmental organizations, knowledge management, nonprofit management and leadership, public management and leadership, public policy, and public safety management.

The course-based online M.S. in psychology program includes a specialization in industrial/organizational psychology.

Through a mix of research, fieldwork, and courses taught by national experts, the M.S. in mental health counseling program prepares students to address and treat behavioral disorders knowledgeably, ethically, and with respect for diversity.

The M.S. in education program develops scholar-practitioners among educators serving students in K–12 classrooms. The program offers specializations in curriculum, instruction, and assessment (grades K–12); educational leadership; elementary reading and literacy (grades K–6); elementary reading and mathematics (grades K–6); integrating technology in the classroom (grades 3–12); literacy and learning in the content areas (grades 6–12); mathematics (grades K–5); mathematics (grades 6–8); middle level education (grades 5–8); and science (grades K–8).

The M.S. in public health program prepares students to lead communities in the development of population-based assessment techniques and intervention strategies to improve health-care access and service delivery.

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program is practice-oriented, designed to prepare students who have little or no experience in community health to work with communities to map their assets and needs. Graduates are able to develop and evaluate culturally relevant interventions to promote public health.

The M.S. in nursing program is based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Master's Education and American Nurses Association's (ANA) Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators. It offers specializations in education and in leadership and management.

The High-Tech M.B.A. is designed to propel technology professionals into positions of leadership at today's highly competitive technology-based businesses. Specializations include business process management, emerging technologies, engineering innovation, global product management, information strategies, and technical project management.

The M.S. in computer engineering program prepares students to work in the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of digital technology. Specializations include computer systems, digital systems, networks, and secure computing.

In the M.S. in computer science program, students develop an advanced body of knowledge in the design, analysis, and implementation of algorithmic processes that transform raw data into valuable information. Specializations are offered in algorithms and complexity, artificial intelligence, computer systems, data management, networks, secure computing, simulation and game design, and Web applications.

The M.S. in electrical engineering program provides students with a technical background for analysis, design, development, operation, or research on electrical or electronic systems. Specializations include communications, integrated circuits, and microelectronics and semiconductors. Several concentrations are available for each specialization.

The M.S. in engineering management program, designed with industry input, provides a broad technical management educational experience.

In the M.S. in software engineering program, students become experts in the latest software development theories and the fundamental engineering principles that support progressive software design. Specializations include secure computing, simulation and game design, software development, software management, software systems engineering, and software testing and reliability.

The M.S. in systems engineering program provides engineers with the necessary processes and tools to define and validate system requirements, develop effective designs, and ensure those designs are safe and meet customer requirements. Specializations include business process engineering, resource optimization engineering, systems engineering, systems engineering management, and systems quality and reliability.

Student Services

Student services include academic advising, course management, financial aid, technical assistance, orientation programming, disability services, tutoring, and a writing center. Walden University's partnership with the Indiana University Bloomington library provides reference, search, catalog, and distribution services.

Credit Options

Transfer of credit from other institutions is permitted in most Walden degree programs. Applicants can request an informal transfer of credit evaluation prior to admission. Official notification of credits accepted for transfer may be issued at admission or once required documents are received.

Walden offers students a variety of options to assist in funding their educational expenses. Most Walden students receive some form of financial assistance. Available options include federal programs, veterans' education benefits, and institutional fellowships. Tuition reductions are also available for group/spousal enrollment. Walden can also assist students in securing private scholarships, employer tuition benefits, and loans from private lenders.

Applying

Submission of a completed and signed application, a $50 application fee, and a personal/professional statement of purpose is required. Applicants must also send a resume, official transcripts from the institution that conferred the bachelor's or master's degree, and, in health and human services, two required recommendation forms. Students can also apply online.
