Distance Learning Program

Westwood College started offering online degree programs in May 2002. Westwood College Online is an excellent option for students who are outside of the metro areas served by Westwood campuses or students whose work or family obligations do not allow time to attend scheduled classes on campus.

Delivery Media

The online courses are instructor-led, not self-paced. Assignments are due weekly. The online courses may include the use of threaded discussions simulating in-class discussion and inter-action; group projects; student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and instructor-to-student e-mails, chat rooms, short online audio and video lectures, and graphical demonstrations of concepts.

Programs of Study

Currently, Westwood offers ten bachelor's degree programs and three associate degree programs though distance learning. Students should check the Web site for up-to-date listings.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in animation (183 quarter credit hours) equips students with the skills necessary to enter the field of animation. This program covers topics such as the laws of human motion, physics, and psychology as applied to 2-D and 3-D characters, life drawing and rendering techniques, and the application of audio and video to an animation project.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting (180 quarter credit hours) equips students with the business and financial skills necessary to advance in the field of accounting. In addition, the combination of management and general education courses in the program helps students apply skills in general management, critical thinking, logic, communication, and problem solving to workplace challenges. This program also includes critical courses that cover such topics as cost accounting, financial accounting, auditing, and financial reporting.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing and sales (180 quarter credit hours) equips students with the business skills necesary to advance in the field of marketing and sales. In addition, the combination of management and general education courses in the program helps students apply skills in general management, critical thinking, logic, communication, and problem solving to workplace challenges. This program also includes critical marketing and sales courses that cover such topics as consumer behavior, marketing research, professional selling, and Internet marketing and sales.

The Bachelor of Science in computer network management program (180 quarter credit hours) is designed to provide students with the advanced networking skills required to design, install, configure, and maintain enterprise-wide networks.

The Bachelor of Science in criminal justice (183 quarter credit hours) equips students academically and professionally by developing a knowledge base, social awareness, and technological skills for an entry-level position in today's criminal justice environment.

The Bachelor of Science in e-business management program (181.5 quarter credit hours) is designed to integrate technology, business, and employability skills to prepare students for entry-level jobs in the burgeoning field of e-business.

The Bachelor of Science in visual communications program (183 quarter credit hours) is designed to prepare students with the design, marketing, and technical skills necessary to advance in the field of visual communications.

The Bachelor of Science in Web design and multimedia (183 quarter credit hours) equips students with Web design, e-commerce, scripting, and authoring skills necessary to advance in the field of Web design.

Westwood College has been providing accelerated career-focused education since 1953. In addition to online degree programs, Westwood College currently operates fourteen Technology campuses and three Aviation Technology campuses with locations in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas.

Westwood's accelerated programs enable a student to complete an associate degree in as little as seventeen months, or a bachelor's degree in thirty-four months, allowing that student to enter or advance in a chosen field in less time.

Online degree programs are offered through Westwood College–Denver North Online Programs and are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT).

The Game Software Development Bacheolor Program (193.5 quarter credit hours) is designed to provide students with the ability to apply core knowledge of software engineering to employment settings through a curriculum that emphasizes game and interactive software development. In addition, general education courses assist students in applying critical thinking, logic, communication, and problem-solving skills in managing challenges that occur in a game development environment.

The Information Systems Security Bachelor Program (180 quarter credit hours) is designed to provide students with the advanced security skills required to implement e-business security solutions and policies, identify security threats and develop countermeasures using firewall systems and attack recognition technologies, and manage the deployment of security solutions.

The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in computer network engineering program (108 quarter credit hours) is designed to provide students with the skills required to design, install, configure, and maintain enterprise-wide networks.

The Associate of Applied Science in graphic design and multimedia program (90 quarter credit hours) prepares students for entry-level jobs in the graphic design and multimedia industry. Students learn to create effective designs that communicate visually in both print and multimedia environments.

The Associate of Applied Science in software engineering program (91.5 quarter credit hours) provides students with the skills required to design and implement computer software.

Special Programs

Alumni retraining is a special program at Westwood. All Westwood alumni are entitled to tuition-free graduate retraining in the program they completed at Westwood. Graduates are able to audit classes to update their skills as curriculum changes in their field of study. Charges for books and student fees may apply.

Student Services

Westwood distance learning students receive online access to the same student services that are provided to on-campus students. With its academic advising, Westwood is dedicated to helping students remove obstacles to success. There are several programs that provide students with the opportunity to solve problems, share ideas, and set goals with members of the college staff. Westwood has a free tutoring program that provides online help. There is a full research library that is available online to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Distance learning students also have access to technical assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The primary objective of the Career Development Services Office is to help students achieve their career goals. At Westwood, successful job-placement assistance begins long before graduation. In fact, Westwood's unique approach to career planning and jobplacement assistance begins at registration and continues beyond graduation.

Credit Options

There are four ways to achieve advanced academic standing at Westwood College: with transfer credits from accredited colleges or universities, through articulation agreements with selected high schools and colleges, through Westwood College Proficiency Exams, and through Advanced Placement (AP) exams, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, or nationally recognized certification exams.

Faculty

Westwood Online's faculty is composed of full-time and part-time instructors from Westwood's fourteen technology campuses, plus additional experts in the individual field of study.

Admission

Each applicant must demonstrate proficiency in basic college-level skills as evidenced by attaining passing scores on any of the following examinations: For the ACT, the applicant must have a composite score of at least 17 on both the English and the Mathematics sections of the exam. For the SAT, the applicant must have a score of at least 460 on both the Mathematics and Verbal sections of the exam. For the Accuplacer Computerized Placement Tests, applicants must have passing scores on at least three of the following four exams: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, Arithmetic, and Elementary Algebra.

Tuition and Fees

The standard tuition fee is $3729 per term plus a $30 online fee per credit hour. Lab charges, tool kits, and books are additional and vary with the program of study.

Applying

To qualify for admission, students must submit an application fee of $25 and a registration fee of $75, provide proof of a high school diploma or GED completion, and provide passing test scores from college-level exams outlined in the Admission section.
