Ashes, The
Ashes, The Cricket trophy, consisting of an urn containing the ashes of stumps and bails, nominally held by the winner of the test series between England and Australia. The urn was presented to the English captain in 1883, after Australia's victory in the 1882 Oval test match had prompted a mock obituary to English cricket in the Sporting Times.
