high-definition television (HDTV) Form of television on which the picture is made up of 1250 or 1125 scanning lines instead of 625 or 525. The increased number of scanning lines makes the TV image sharper. It relies on digital transmission down optical fibres, rather than the transmission of electronic signals by radio waves. The use of cables increases the total number of available channels.
