Rothschild, Meyer Amschel (1744–1812) German financier, founder of a banking dynasty. He made his fortune in Frankfurt during the Napoleonic Wars. His five sons established branches in the financial centres of Europe. The Rothschilds were one of the chief financial powers in the 19th century, but developments in state financing reduced their influence. The family continues to be active in banking and as wine-makers.
