unified field theory
unified field theory Attempt to extend the general theory of relativity to give a simultaneous representation of both gravitational and electromagnetic fields. A more comprehensive theory would also include the strong and weak nuclear forces. Although some success has been achieved in unifying the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces, the general problem is still unsolved. See also grand unified theory (GUT)
