Cleland, William

Cleland, William (c.1661–89). Cleland joined the covenanting rising of 1679 and fought at Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge. In 1685 he took part in Argyll's rising and at the revolution of 1688 gave allegiance to William III. On 21 August 1689 a small force led by Cleland was cut off by Jacobites at Dunkeld, but drove off their assailants. Cleland was killed during the battle.
