Dunes, battle of the
Dunes, battle of the, 1658. On 14 June Turenne, commanding the French forces with the help of an English contingent under Sir William Lockhart, attacked a Spanish army defending Dunkirk. The Spaniards, under Don John and Condé, were badly beaten, losing 4,000 prisoners. James, duke of York, the future James II, fought on the Spanish side. Dunkirk surrendered soon after and was handed over to the English.
