Fairfax, Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Baron
Fairfax, Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Baron [S] (1584–1648). Parliamentary commander in the Civil War. As soon as fighting began in 1642, Fairfax was put in command of Parliament's forces in Yorkshire, his home county. The early months of 1643 were spent jockeying for position, but in June 1643 he was badly beaten by Newcastle at Adwalton Moor and besieged in Hull. With his son Sir Thomas Fairfax he gained a significant victory at Selby in April 1644 and he fought at Marston Moor, where his son Charles was killed. He resigned in accordance with the self-denying ordinance of 1645.
