Kenneth III

Kenneth III (d. 1005), king of ‘Scotland’ (997–1005). He was son of King Dub and became king by killing Constantine III in battle at ‘Rathinveramon’ (probably a couple of miles north of Perth). This engagement represented the final victory of Kenneth's branch of the royal dynasty over its rivals, the descendants of Æd (d. 878). Kenneth faced competition for the kingship from his own branch of the dynasty, however, and was killed in battle at Monzievaird (15 miles west of Perth) by Malcolm II, his first cousin. Later king-lists credit Kenneth's reign to a son called Giric, but this conflicts with contemporary evidence.
