Northumberland, Henry Percy, 3rd earl of
Northumberland, Henry Percy, 3rd earl of (1421–61). Percy was warden of the east march from 1440. He was entitled Lord Poynings following his wife's succession to that Sussex barony. The feud with the Nevilles and the death of his father, the 2nd earl, in the first battle of St Albans made him a Lancastrian partisan. He continued as warden despite being owed wages for several years. He helped to defeat Richard of York at Wakefield in 1460. The unruly conduct of his army of northerners alarmed the citizens of London; their success at the second battle of St Albans thus failed to win the capital. Northumberland was killed in the battle of Towton.
