Spanish blanks conspiracy, 1593. A number of Scottish noblemen were in negotiation with Philip II of Spain to restore catholicism in Scotland. In 1593 a messenger was apprehended bearing blank letters with signatures. Under torture, he implicated Huntly, Erroll, and Angus, but the mysterious affair was eventually compromised.
