Stirling Bridge, battle of, 1297. Edward I's victory at Dunbar in 1296 did not keep Scotland subdued for long. On 11 September 1297 a large English army, under John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, and Hugh de Cressingham, was caught by William Wallace crossing a narrow bridge over the Forth near Stirling. Cressingham was killed and Edward's conquest had to begin again.
